Prof. KARL DEARN

A mechanical engineer with over twenty years of industrial and academic experience. He is the Head of the Department of Mechanical & Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham. During the past ten years, Dearn has built a team of researchers specializing in mechanical design and tribology. His research focuses predominantly on making mechanical systems, devices, and components achieve higher efficiency and performance levels. His research cuts across themes including energy, materials, manufacturing, transportation, biomedical engineering and water systems. Dearn deploys design methodologies founded on the fundamental principles of mechanics. This research is catalyzed by developing design methods and mathematical tools to solve problems innovatively. Dearn designs and develops the engineering infrastructure and technology to support DWS.
